Rescuing Animals from the Exotic Pet Trade

How safe would you feel to learn a bear or other large animal is living next door to you, in your neighbor’s back yard? As outrageous as it sounds, it happens thousands of times throughout the United States because the simple fact is a cub can be purchased for as little as $300. Because it is legal, it is estimated that there are over 20,000 of these animals living in these conditions throughout the United States. Because private ownership of these animals is not viable in the long term and the animal can not be placed back in the wild or zoo, the need for rescue organizations with sanctuary spaces is needed more than ever.

Upcoming Events

BEARS Etc. hosts a wide variety of community events that help with education as well as raise funds to help provide sanctuary or placement to as many of these animals as possible.

Get Involved

BEARS Etc. has multiple ways for you to get involved. There is much work to be done and we are always looking for volunteers to help.

About BEARS Etc.

BEARS Etc. has a long track record of rescuing a wide variety of animals throughout southeast Texas. Learn more about us and how we serve our community.

The Changes Start Here

The Big Cat Public Safety Act (HR 3546) will ensure big cats only live in secure facilities that can provide for them and not diminish public safety.

  • There are as many as 20,000 big cats that are privately maintained.
  • Private owners cannot control or manage dangerous cats’ size, appetite nor ferality.
  • The solution requires federal intervention so the laws are uniform across the country.

Our Mission

To provide a permanent, community-based, self-sustainable refuge for displaced exotic and wild animals and educate others about the natural world.

Providing education is how we start to make a change. Large carnivores are not pets and the public at-large needs to understand they are not safe to have in one’s home. BEARS Etc. has an extensive education program that teaches this basic principle. Our topics cover:

  • Why large carnivores are not pets.
  • What individuals can do to change the laws.
  • How you can help locally.
  • Why BEARS Etc. is the organization to call to help with placement.

Need Help With an Exotic Animal’s Rescue?

BEARS Etc. is South Texas’ leader in animal rescue and placement. Whether it’s a private owner who no longer can care for the exotic animal, a person or organization selling these animals through the exotic pet trade, or animal control needing assistance, our organization has a long history of facilitating solutions for these animals. We also aid in aviary and aquatic rescues, with on-premise facilities. Our network is large, as is our ability to help.
